The Old Schoolhouse is a protected structure located in Ardfield Village and was first constructed in 1832. The building had fallen into disrepair after being vacant for many years. The brief was to bring life back into this wonderful building, creating a family home in the heart of the community.
The new design created a four bedroom, two bathroom house with large Kitchen/Dining/Living area in what was formerly the school classroom and school masters living quarters. Two perfectly proportioned extensions were added to create the entrance porch and bathroom/utility block. A new sunroom to the rear of the building was also added.
This overlooks the garden and takes full advantage of the vista westwards to the beautiful west cork coastline.
All of the materials used in the restoration were in keeping with the original architectural features. These include hardwood sash windows and doors, natural slate roof, cast iron gutters and downpipes and pitch pine roof trusses. High levels of insulation along with underfloor heating and solar panels have helped to create a comfortable family home within an aesthetically beautiful old building.
